Yeah, a tree—standing tall, strong, deeply rooted in the earth. Effortlessly, trees bend in the wind and rain. Sometimes a branch will break under the weight of ice and snow. Then in the spring, it grows back.
Now think of doing something effortlessly. Something challenging, maybe painful, like a tree that bears the ice and snow in winter.
Now think, yeah…but we’re not trees. We have a complex neuroscience that interacts with our psychology, creating feelings that often interfere or make acting in an effortless manner challenging. And you would be right.
I want you to consider that within the last 94 words, I asked you to think of three different things. If you did, you might be a little calmer than you were 94 words ago. Your breathing is relaxed. Maybe you’re thinking of nature and the lesson we can learn from a tree. Your whole focus changed in 94 words. That’s mindfulness.
I have had a consistent meditation practice for over 35 years. The benefits from meditation have been personally life changing.
